

Lower Dauphin Olympians
Among the many very fine athletes to come out of Lower Dauphin High School's sports program are three Olympians, Their respective coaches are Ms. Beatrice Hallman who set the standard high when she created and developed the field hockey program in the 1960s, Mr Edward Romano, passionate track and field coach who refined the sport by raising the bar at LDHS, and Ms. Linda Kreiser '70, a national seminal figure as a field hockey coach and one othe greatest female athletes in the history of Millersvill University.
Dr Julia Staver '70
Dr. Staver is Lower Dauphin's first widely recognized female scholar athlete, long preceding today's well-used phrase. She played for US lacross team in the 1970's was captain of the 1980 US Olympic women's field hockey team and co-captain of the 1984 bronze medal-winning US Olympic team. Julia has a thriving veterinary practice in the Reading PA area specializing in small animals and was one of the four distinguished alumni honored by the Lower Dauphin Alumni Association at the Golden Jubilee.
Steve Spence '80
At Lower Dauphin, Spence won the 1980 Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Athletic Association (PIAA) Class AAA 1600 meter championship in a then-state record of 4:12. He also won the 1980 PIAA state championship in the mile run with a state record time. A seven -time NCAA Division II All American. He is a member of the 1992 Olympic team and finished 12th in the men's marathon. marketing the best US olympic marathon finish to that date. He is cross country coach at Shippensburg University.
Laurel Hershey '87
Hershey was a member of the US women's field hockey team that finished fifth at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. She competed in two Hockey World Cup tournaments in 1990 and as a member of the USA bronze medal team an eaned NCAA all-tournament honors in 1989. She captured a bronze medal at the 1991 Pan American Games and earned a silver medal Pan Am medal in 1995. She won a bronze medal at the 1995 Champions Trophy and is the head field hockey coach at Lebanon Valley College.
